The Neighborhood School

The Neighborhood School is a Pre-kindergarten through eighth grade Christian school for children who need more love and hope. Most come from the Binghampton community with the largest number coming from housing projects near the school.

The school opened August 30, 1993 in the gym a Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with 15 students and one teacher. In August 1994 the school moved to its present location with three teachers and 26, soon to be 41, students. The next year we had five teachers and 70 students. This move was made possible because Jim Threlkeld wanted us to have his former law office for the school.

Now we have twelve teachers, 140 students, Head of School, Director of our After School/Summer Enrichment Program, chef, staff assistant and a community liaison. We have four excellent buildings. The second building, which houses our middle school and pre-school classes was the gift of Jim Robinson and his mother, Martha Robinson. Additionally, we have two dormitory facilities connected in one contiguous campus.

For years we had a residential facility for five of our boys who had the greatest need. In 2008, we expanded that program because there are so many whose lives could turn around if they were in a loving, caring, environment. The two dormitories serve 14 girls and 14 boys.

The board of trustees is devoted to fulfilling the vision for which God brought the school into being, to reach the totally unreached. Our goal is to give each child the opportunity to appreciate who he/she is in Christ Jesus, to succeed academically, and to live a meaningful life. Because we firmly believe in this mission, all of the faculty prays together from 7:15 to 7:45 every school day and each of the students have two people who pray for him/her every day. Additionally, the teachers and volunteers begin every activity with prayer, and we have a weekly hour of prayer for Binghampton.
