The Montessori method was developed in the late 1800s in the slums of Italy by physician and educator, Maria Montessori. She believed that children learned best if they were able to teach themselves. In order for such self directed learning to take place, the whole learning environment room, materials and social climate needed to be supportive of the learner.

Most Montessori schools in the United States have modified the program so that children may still work with the materials devised over 100 years ago, but often in ways Dr. Montessori never dreamed.

Here, at the Montessori Plus Early Learning Center, we have added additional features, such as games, toys, computers and
workbooks. We include all developmentally appropriate ideas and materials in the curriculum, thereby expanding on the Montessori method.

The teachers help children develop creativity and social skills, and their experiences outside the classroom are enhanced through additional activities, such as nature walks, library visits, and field trips. Every program has its set of ground rules which differ from age to age, but is always based on core Montessori beliefs respect for each other and for the environment. The program is educational and lively and includes music, art, storytelling, movement, and physical education. Children work at their own pace with materials they have chosen. Individual mastery is accomplished through active, self-directed learning.
