St. Joseph School Pre-kindergarten Program

St. Joseph School provides a child-centered environment that encourages learning through exploration and discovery. Through various theme-based units, many teacher-directed learning activities take place in religion, math, science, language skills, art, music, dramatic play, and story time. The program used to teach handwriting is, Handwriting Without Tears. The curriculum also includes art, library, science, music, physical education, and Spanish.

Kindergarten through second grade curriculum is based on diocesan, state and national standards. Students are consistently exposed to material within and beyond this curriculum. Beginning in Kindergarten, a balanced approach to teaching reading is through the use of the Scott Foresman basal series and is enhanced with the C.A.R.E. (Children Achieving Reading Excellence) program. These incorporate a highly structured phonics-based approach with multi-sensory activities. Skills such as decoding, comprehension and vocabulary building are emphasized across all content areas.
