Rock Spring Cooperative Preschool

Preschool in Arlington, VA 22207

Welcome to the Rock Spring Cooperative Preschool, a parent-run school, with a teacher-led curriculum, and children-led play.

Founded in 1943 by a group of caring and inventive mothers, Rock Spring is the oldest cooperative preschool in Arlington. We offer age-specific classes for one to five-year-olds, as well as an Extended Day Program and Summer Camp.
Our learning-through-play philosophy provides a stimulating environment for development and growth with an emphasis on nurturing each childs individuality, self-esteem, and joy in learning. We believe the preschool childs intellectual, social, and emotional growth is best fostered through active play guided by qualified teachers.
As a member of our cooperative preschool, parents have an unparalleled opportunity to observe, support, and guide their childrens growth. Parents also share the day-to-day responsibilities of running and managing the school.
The school is located on the Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ campus, at the intersection of Little Falls and Rock Spring roads. It is a parent-operated, non-sectarian, non-profit corporation, administered by a Board of Directors who are elected from the current membership. We are a county and state licensed preschool, and a member of the Virginia Cooperative Preschool Council.

The RSCP philosophy is based on the knowledge that young children learn by playing and that their play reflects their continual emotional, social, intellectual, and physical growth and development. Our most important goal is to have each child develop a positive self-image, and an interest and joy in learning. To do this, parents and teachers strive to provide a nurturing, stimulating, environment in which children learn through play experiences.
Each child can expect to be treated with respect. The child can try out ideas, express feelings, and know that he or she will still be accepted and loved as a worthy individual. Teachers and parents help children form good habits, solve problems, learn to interact with others, and develop a good self-image.
There are no predetermined standards of achievement at Rock Spring. Each child is free to create in a way that is entirely his or her own. The end product will not be judged according to peer or adult standards of creativity but according to the childs own eye.
