Hilltop Childrens Center opened in 1971, operating from Queen Anne Lutheran Church on the top of Queen Anne by church members needing after-school care for their children. Out of which was created Seattle Institute of Early Childhood Development, which remains Hilltops official organizational name though we do business as (D/B/A) Hilltop Childrens Center.

Since around 2002, Hilltop Childrens Center has been inspired by the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy, a movement that was teacher-driven. In 2008, Hilltop moved from the top of Queen Anne, from the QA Lutheran Church where it was housed for 37 years, to its current location at 4 Nickerson Street, Suite 100, Seattle, WA 98109.

Hilltop offers bright, curriculum-driven learning spaces and helps build a strong sense of community among children, parents, and staff.

Hilltop is a place where . . .

  • Children are valued for their ability to do meaningful work, their sense of wonder and curiosity, their perspectives, and ability to play
  • Families are valued for their bonds and traditions, their ability to play, their commitment to work, home, and community, and their dreams for their children
  • Staff are valued for their vision, their delight in children, their skill and knowledge, their commitment to families

We cherish what we learn from one another.

Our program is inspired by childrens curiosity and natural inclination to learn through play. Teachers observe childrens play and listen carefully to childrens questions so they may support emergent projects and creations that come directly from the children instead of the teachers. In small group work teams and large group free choice activities, teachers provide invitations to the children on topics they express interest in.
