The Waldorf School of San Diego

Preschool in San Diego, CA 92105

At The Waldorf School of San Diego, educating the “Head, Heart and Hands” isn’t just a motto. It’s a mission based on a commitment to helping all kids grow into well-rounded and thoughtful adults. “We want to help each child fulfill his or her own potential, whatever that may be,” says admissions director Julie Joinson. “All children have a capacity to be gifted in different ways, and our job is to help them find their path.” The Waldorf School of San Diego currently serves 285 children from nursery through high school and is growing rapidly. At all ages, art, music and movement are an integral part of the curriculum. “Whatever lesson they’re working on — history or math or physics or chemistry — there’s always an artistic component designed to help the children understand the subject by using all their senses,” Joinson says. The hands-on curriculum focuses on bringing the right thing, at the right time. Helping children learn how to think, not what to think, is also a hallmark of a Waldorf education. Waldorf Education was developed in 1919 and has become the fastest-growing independent school movement in the world. Today, 94 percent of Waldorf high school graduates attend a four-year college, with more than 50 percent going on to advanced degrees. With a second school in North County and two early childhood centers in Fallbrook and Oceanside and a Waldorf Teacher Education program here in San Diego, the Waldorf approach is becoming more popular by the day in San Diego County. Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf Education, summed it up well: “Receive the children in reverence, educate them in love, send them forth in freedom.”

Evolving from a profound understanding of the human spirit and human development, Waldorf Education is regionally adaptive and has grown to include hundreds of schools worldwide.
