A Fun, Hands-On Approach to Learning:
Our goal at Washington Street Children’s Center is to provide children with a nurturing, secure, and comfortable environment in which to develop and enhance their personality and skills. Our philosophy focuses on developing positive self esteem, as well as respect towards adultes and peers. This important goal is achieved through positive role models, praise, and encouragement.
Our educational preschool curriculum is carefully planned by qualified. caring staff to develop and promote the socio-emotional, cognitive, physical, and creative “selves” of each individual child. Children learn best through play with other children, child initiated activities, teacher guided lessons, and real life experiences. Children learn by doing. Beginning in our toddler program right up through our kindergarten program the activities that are implemented are stimulating, child-oriented, fun, and educational.
Our programs encourage children to explore and discover. children are provided with experiences in the areas of creative expression, math, science, social studies, music and movement, cooking, lieracy, and language.
Children in all programs participate daily in group “Circle Time” which consists of songs, poems, fingerplays, games, language asssociation:verbal and receptive, and a wide range of literature to develop and promote language and literacy skills. Our preschool programs promote a child’s natural love of learning by presenting thematic units in developmentally appropriate, hands-on, experiences. These sensory experiences will help children to begin to understand the world in which they live in. Basic skills in the areas reading, writing, and math concepts are reinforced daily through interesting, age appropriate lessons.
Free play is offered frequently thrroughout the day. Children may choose from a variety of materials including, but not limited to: blocks/block center, dramatic play center, housekeeping center, discovery centers(sand and water tables), art/ creative centers, manipulatives.
Children are entitiled(weather permitting) to spend part of their learning time outdoors. Our large, fenced in outside environment is designed for active play and for enhancing large motor skills. The outside activities are based on the development of each child within an age group.
We also believe that you, the parents are the most significant resource. you know your child best, and we hope that you will share this knowledge with us to help make your child’s time here at WSCC a happy, rewarding early childhood experience!
