At A Childs Place School, we believe the purpose of education is to promote the growth of learning, to develop self-awareness and a sense of competency, and to enhance and encourage a spirit of inquiry. Children are active participants in the educational process and learn best through their own interest and activity. Teachers guide children to expand their knowledge by building on what they know. Learning is an active social process. To educate is to provide experiences that enable children to think, to feel, and to respond meaningfully in their own fashion.

Our program is child-oriented rather than exclusively teacher or subject directed. The curriculum is geared to the child’s interest and developmental level. Our teachers, trained to observe closely how a child functions, takes cues from the child and plans a stimulating environment suited to the child’s interest and development. Children are given opportunities to choose materials, develop their own projects and plan part of their day. Each child is respected and treated as a partner in the learning adventure, not as a passive recipient.
At A Child’s Place we provide an informal atmosphere and a warm acceptance of the child and their views as they are offered. In this way they may freely continue to question, take risks and make new conclusions without fear of being judged right or wrong. Children are empowered to see themselves as problem solvers capable of sharing ideas and working together, with their peers and their teachers. We do not foster competition but instead enable cooperation.
Our knowledgeable teachers are capable of recognizing and utilizing the teachable moment, whenever and wherever it occurs regardless of the plan of the day. Our staff provides ways to engage children both intellectually and emotionally; and our classrooms are aesthetically pleasing environments with elements of natural beauty, light, and color.
Our curriculum evolves each year so it is never quite the same from year to year. Throughout each school year and often integrated with project work, our teachers incorporate the following academic and affective areas of the curriculum:Dramatic Play Music/Movement Language Arts Creative Arts Symbolic/Abstract Relationships/Mathematics Nature and Science Social Studies and Geography Family Life Health, Nutrition, Safety Social Relationships Physical Education Multi-Cultural Awareness and Anti-Bias Education
