Carousel Playschool is a cooperative playschool for 3-5 year olds, organized and operated by parents. Our purpose is to
provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum that provides for social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth.
At the same time, parents have the opportunity to share their child’s first school experiences, while gaining a better
understanding and appreciation of the child’s development and individuality.

Our overall program goals are to provide a safe, loving environment in which to learn and grow. We follow the Project
Construct Curriculum, which is based on the belief that children construct their own knowledge and values as a result of
interactions with the physical and social world. Children are active, thinking, unique individuals who are learning to
make sense of their world. We provide a variety of safe, carefully selected toys and equipment with which to learn
through hands on play and experiences. Children have numerous opportunities for creative expression through the
multitude of activities available in the classroom centers. Each child has the chance to grow with a feeling of success and
competency at his or her own unique rate.

As teachers, our goal is to provide the best possible environment for the children to explore and grow, and to give parents
the opportunity to become active participants in their child’s learning. We structure our days and plan activities in a way
that will help us meet the goals stated above. We meet regularly to plan for the coming weeks and months, and we
communicate with the parents daily to ensure that we are working toward the same goals.
We hope to help parents learn what may generally be expected of a child at each stage of his or her development, and to
gain a better understanding of their own children in the first steps away from home, working toward independence. An
added benefit is that parents experience companionship with each other as they work together in acceptance of their
children’s individualities and differences. As parents and as educators, we are all partners in a mission to provide our
children with the best possible foundation for future learning.
