Preschool in Chicopee, MA 01022
Sunny Hill Preschool was founded as a non-profit organization in 1958 by the Sudbury United Methodist Church, and we celebrated our fiftieth anniversary in 2008. While the school is sponsored by the church, religion is not a part of the curriculum. The school offers a play-based program that combines preparation for kindergarten with an emphasis on a childs social and emotional development. The focus of the programs at Sunny Hill Preschool is on the whole childs social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. Teachers develop classroom themes and activities that integrate sensory experiences, pre-reading and pre-math concepts, science, social studies, art, social and self-help skills.
The mission of the school is to make a high quality, affordable, nurturing and supportive early childhood learning environment available to families in Sudbury and the surrounding communities. As one of the very first programs in the Sudbury area, it also served as model of excellence in early childhood education. The daily operations of the school are overseen by a full-time Director. An appointed committee of church members is responsible for policy making and various functions related to the operation of the school.

Sunny Hill Preschool has a child-centered, play-based philosophy. We believe in a developmentally appropriate curriculum for children two to five years of age, presented in an environment which fosters the individual child’s emotional, social, physical, and cognitive skills. Our talented, professional team of early childhood educators create an environment that supports and develops a love of learning, respect, cooperation, leadership, an ability to make choices, pride in individual accomplishments and problem solving skills.
Our goal is to promote learning through the joy of discovery. Children, supported by our staff, are constantly thinking, exploring, experiencing, learning and testing new skills, and creating scaffolding for a lifetime of learning. As children grow and develop in our program, they are both nurtured and challenged as they move towards the greater independence that elementary school brings.
The focus of our preschool curriculum is to prepare children socially, emotionally and academically for the many challenges that elementary school brings. Our curriculum is guided and shaped by our experienced staff of early childhood educators, standards of developmentally appropriate practice, National Association for the Education of Young Children recommendations and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks Guidelines for Preschool Curriculum Experiences. While the school is sponsored by the church, religion is not a part of the curriculum. Our classrooms also incorporate The Creative Curriculum and the Handwriting Without Tears Program into daily activities.
