“To educate the human potential” is the premise at the core of the Montessori philosophy.

Through a unique complex of this philosophy, psychology, educational theory, materials and methods, the Montessori classroom environment creates the opportunity for maximizing the development and abilities of the individual from their earliest stages through maturity.

In linking the humanities directly to the concerns of humanity, Montessori embodies an integrated approach to education; introducing students not only to the fundamentals of essential knowledge, but also to connections across the disciplines, and, in the end, to the application of knowledge to life itself.

Through self-discovery, self-perfection and contribution, Dr. Montessori sought to allow children their birthright of essential human qualities and hence the freedom to grow in social grace, inner discipline and joy.

By going on to excel in various private and parochial schools and special public high school programs, graduates of Near North serve as an ongoing testimonial to their own achievements, preparedness and high standards. These students share in common the traits of self-discipline, initiative and competence necessary to contribute as confident, socially adept young adults in a politically free, economically competitive and technologically oriented society.

While at Near North, students are also challenged to think in balanced, ecologically sound terms. As the school strives to meet current needs without compromising those of future generations, students are led to consider, evaluate and take part in these choices and challenges. Just as Maria Montessori advocated a “cosmic education” that emphasized the vast interrelatedness of the universe, our teachers provide students opportunities to observe the life cycles and complex social webs on which all life depends.

Near North is a member in good standing of the Association Montessori Internationale and Illinois Montessori Society, North American Montessori Teacher Association and is recognized by the State Board of Education.
