The Child Development Center is an adventure in Christian service
offered to the community by the congregation of the Presbyterian Church
of Vernon. You do not have to be a church member to enroll your child.
Parents are always welcome at Vernon Child Development Center. We
are proud of the open door policy that weve maintained since 1978.
The Child Development Center provides two programs: Child Care and
Preschool. This booklet describes our child care program. If you are
interested in preschool, please contact our office for more information.
The ruling body of the church, the session, established the preschool in
September of 1978 and the childcare program in September of 1980. The
session of Vernon Presbyterian Church each year appoints a Child
Development Center Committee responsible for the Center. The budget
and finances of the Center are publicly reviewed along with all church
funds at our congregational meetings. We do not permit discrimination
because of race, religion, color, age, handicap, sex, or national origin.

We have adapted a cognitively oriented curriculum in which children are
active, both physically and mentally, and in which they seek out and
organize information on their own. It is a framework for the education of
creative and independent mindseducation that teaches the process of
active learning. Children participate in a daily process of planning,
doing, and reviewing that sharpens decision making skills. They acquire
the beginning skills for reading, language arts, mathematics, and science.
Time is set aside each day for a prayer before snacks and sometimes for a
short story about the wonders of Gods world. Our pastor shares weekly
Bible stories and Christian songs with our preschool groups. We teach a
message common to all denominations, emphasizing the love of God and
Jesus Christ and treating all people with respect. We do not teach the
doctrine of any particular denomination.
Learning experiences include the sharing of information, planning play,
story telling, finger plays, songs and games all developing leadership
and self confidence.
Daily emphasis is put on large and small muscle development through
creativity in play, art projects, and easel painting. Activity areas available
throughout the day include housekeeping, library, blocks, art and puzzles
and games. Other activities set up from time to time may be inside or
outside: water play, sand play, carpentry, science, and music.
