Jarrow Montessori, a not-for-profit, private school and the oldest Montessori school in Colorado, was founded over forty years ago in 1964. The original founders, Christopher and Margot Brauchli, Florence Lennon, James and Prudence Scarritt, Andor Toth, Gary and Margaret Stahl and Hardy and James Frank wanted a quality Montessori experience for their children. Jarrow began as a pre school of twenty-one children operated out of the Sunday School wing of the First Christian Church in Boulder. The school burgeoned until in 1966, Jarrow moved to its present 3 acre site in North Boulder. Soon after that in 1969, Jarrow added kindergarten classes, expanded to 120 students and secured its founding Head of School, Janet Gollin, who led the school for twenty-five years with vision and enthusiasm. “I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to educate children unless you involve yourself in the world they are going to grow up in.”
By her tenth anniversary in 1974, Jarrow was expanding to include an elementary program which today continues up to the sixth grade. The school’s enrollment now looks forward to over 190 students from ages 18 months through the 6th grade.

Dr. Maria Montessori believed that children of the present are the world’s hope for the future. It was her belief that in the early years children develop a strong social, emotional, physical and intellectual foundation. The development of concentration, independence, self-discipline and a sense of order and responsibility are prerequisites for success in learning as well as in becoming a citizen of the world. The Montessori approach is education for life. Jarrow’s goal in using the basic tenets of Montessori is to encourage the development of responsible, caring young people who can direct their own lives, in a conscientious and thoughtful manner, and contribute to making the world a better place for future generations.
Children learn by discovery. They discover ideas on their own if given the right environment and tools. Confidence and self esteem grow from this process of observation and discovery. The Montessori method combines mixed-age classes with a carefully prepared environment of learning materials and flexible daily experiences. Highly qualified teachers and assistants facilitate the learning process by directing the children toward meaningful activity through which they discover and develop their interests and abilities and experience the outcomes of their choices. Special emphasis is placed on respect for self, for others, and for the physical environment.
At every age level, each student receives individual attention to ensure that he or she is challenged and excited about learning. We build upon children’s prior experience with language development at home (beginning with babbling, scribbling, and being read to) to plan purposeful activities at school. Elementary-aged students benefit from hands-on learning approaches and undertake significant research projects, often based on their individual interests. In preparation for an ever-changing world, we equip students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
