Hills and Falls strives to provide a quality play-based education in a safe, diverse and nurturing environment with the support of a strong and cohesive family-teacher community.

Guiding Principles

As a school community, we seek to:

Partner with families in the care and education of their children. Provide the foundations of academic learning and skill development by engaging children in a variety of fun, hands-on opportunities that foster creative thinking, problem solving and a love of learning. Support the physical, emotional, social and intellectual needs of children while readying them for kindergarten or their next experience. Ensure teachers have the knowledge, tools, materials and support necessary to meet the needs of our children and the ability to engage in ongoing learning and self-reflection. Observe and gain insight into each childs individual strengths and provide the tools and nurturing needed for individual growth. Identify areas of need in individual children and provide outside resources when necessary. Embrace the diversity of people and perspectives in our society and foster an environment in which differences are respected and appreciated. Help children understand and appreciate diversity by integrating exposure to differences of race, ethnicity, class, gender, family structure and ability into our curriculum. Treat all members of our community with care and compassion and encourage open, reflective and supportive communication. We make every effort to remain informed and up-to-date with the latest developments, techniques and standards in early childhood education.

Hills and Falls Nursery School was established in 1941 by a group of concerned, thoughtful, and ambitious parents. In the first year, 16 children were enrolled. Over the next several years educators assumed more of the direct responsibilities for the program. Parents participated in the program by helping out in the classroom and sharing in the maintenance of the program. When Hills and Falls Community Nursery School, Inc. was incorporated in 1948 as a non-profit organization, parents became more involved in the schools functioning and financial development. Today, Hills and Falls serves approximately 48 families in the greater Newton-Wellesley area. It continues to follow its long tradition of providing a quality preschool education, and an opportunity for parents to become involved and to share the experience with their children.

For the young child, preschool is the first giant step away from home. We provide a warm, nurturing, and enriching environment, in order to help children feel secure and ready to make that first step. Play is the childs way of learning. During play a child develops socially, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. We encourage their natural abilities in play by providing an environment rich in developmentally appropriate activities for children to explore at their own pace. At Hills and Falls, the children have the added advantage of being able to share this experience with their parents. In a cooperative, parents have the opportunity to be able to share first-hand in what their child is learning. Parents also have the opportunity to know the other children in the class and to begin to appreciate the enormous diversities among children.
