Now in our 44th year of operation, New Hanover County Community Action, Inc. (NHCCA, Inc.) is a private, non-profit organization serving resident of New Hanover County, North Carolina. Our services focus on the growth and development of young children. However, this focus allows us to provide services to family members in the households where the young children reside.
NHCCA, Inc. is funded with federal, state, local and private funds. We strive to always give a hand up not a hand out in helping. We are members of the national, state, and regional Head Start Associations as well as an active member of the N.C. Community Action Association and the National Community Action Partnership.
For the past 44 years, New Hanover County Community Action, Inc. has served children and families in the city of Wilmington and New Hanover County. We were known in our earlier days as Head Start of New Hanover County. Community giants such as Senator Luther Jordan and John H. McCoy dedicated their time, talent and treasures to build the foundation on which our agency was established. With your help and theirs, our small and fledgling Head Start Program was housed in churches, community centers, and old school buildings. As we grew, you came together across racial and economic boundaries to help us acquire the former Peabody Elementary School building. Together, we continued the Campbell Square legacy by providing educational and family services to families with the greatest needs in our community.
Our Success stories are numerous. Some of our most successful Head Start students have grown up to become local radio personalities, business owners, city officials, medical and dental students, and educators. A shining star for us is a former Head Start student from our program who now is a ballerina with the famous Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, Illinois.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent over the past couple of years to prevent members of our community from eviction, loss of electricity and loss of running water. And while we have not been successful in placing large numbers of citizens into desperately needed jobs, we have worked very hard to aid many in obtaining job readiness skills and/or degrees to qualify them for employment. We have even paid for childcare to enable working parents attend school.
Despite these success stories, in recent weeks our agency has been under a battery of negative press courtesy of Star News Media. Whether in print or on line, the Star and its staff have presented partial information about our growing pains and recent challenges. Absent complete facts, some of the Stars information has become distorted and has caused many in our community to question the integrity of our agency.
We write to you today, offering assurance that New Hanover County Community Action, Inc. is intact. We continue to operate programs and offer services to children and families in need. Our commitment to ongoing improvement and quality service continues. Soon to be published reports and other information available on our website give details of our successes in serving you our community. As we work through our challenges, and restructure the way we do business, we ask you to maintain your confidence in us as you have over the years.
