Franklin Square House Childrens Center strives to provide a safe, warm, loving, supportive, non-competitive environment in which children can learn and grow. Our educational philosophy is based on the development model of learning. This means we believe that children grow and learn at their own pace and in their own way as they naturally progress through the different development levels. Children learn through their play. It is our job to provide interesting, fun, engaging play activities for them. It is through these active, hands-on, learning experiences that children are able to construct their own understanding and knowledge about the world around them. They do this by looking, touching, and manipulating things, as well as wondering, discovering, trying out new ideas, and asking questions.

We also believe that each child develops as she or he is meant to develop, and that this development must be looked at as a whole. Childrens intellectual development cannot be separated from their physical or emotional development. Their social development, their ability to understand, appreciate, and get along with each other, is of utmost importance. We help them to try to understand their own feelings and appropriate ways to act on those feelings. We help them to learn creative, peaceable ways to solve problems. Teachers model for the children respect and appreciation for the many different kinds of people and families in our community and around the world. We avoid gender role or any other kind of stereotyping and always encourage cooperative play and learning. As a center, we aim to avoid any and all tie ins to commercialism and materialism.

Our goal is to provide a program that meets the individual needs of each child. Teachers watch and listen to the children and encourage them to express their own ideas and feelings. Children need and want clear limits. The limits we set are for the childrens physical and emotional safety. Helping them to feel independent, responsible, and positive about themselves facilitates their learning
