From its beginning the purpose of Head Start has been to promote school readiness by enhancing the social physical and cognitive development of children. Children from low income families are given the “Head Start” they need to be successful in school and society.
At Head Start children are provided a rich stimulating and appropriate classroom environment. In addition the Head Start program offers health and nutrition screenings and services to ensure early detection and treatment of health-related problems.
Parental involvement in Head Start is stressed and encouraged as it is documented to improve educational performance. Parents frequently plan and help with field trips visit classrooms and adopt our “every moment is a learning opportunity” philosophy.
Children receive daily breakfast and lunch at the Head Start centers. They help to set the table pour the milk select and pass foods to each other. After the children clear the table each child “washes-up” and takes care to brush their teeth.
The Head Start centers in Indian River County serve the county’s most needy families. In addition 10% of students are those with special needs and Head Start incorporates their learning into an environment of inclusion.
