Evergreen Playschool is located in the heart of Midtown Memphis across the street from Rhodes College. We are a small private school affiliated with Evergreen Presbyterian church but consider ourselves a diverse representation of our midtown community. We offer preschool classes for children ages 3 months to Kindergarten.
We use a center-based curriculum in the classroom and believe that the process of an activity is more important than the product.
We use hands on, creative, visual, sensory, and auditory elements to help the children experience the classroom in a variety of ways. We plan activities that provide the children with new experiences that extend their play into other areas such as language, critical and creative thinking, and social interactions. We strive to follow the children’s interest and provide activities that teach, challenge, and stimulate their growing minds.

People often ask why we are called a “playschool?” The reason is that play is the work of children. Babies are born to this world with the capacity to respond, imitate, initiate, and eventually engage in symbolic processes. Just as children’s natural curiosity causes them to crawl to a toy or reach for an intriguing object, play is the innate instinct children have that drives them to learn about themselves and the world around them. Play is an invaluable tool children use to learn social skills. Safe, supervised play in the preschool classroom is the training ground for future social situations when children are learning how to build good peer relationships. Preschool children learn to share, compromise, assert feelings with words, negotiate and navigate their social environment during the formative years. A positive preschool experience will give them a sturdy foundation before they reach their elementary years and set them up for success in a structured classroom environment.
