I hope that everyone had a wonderful Spring Break and is coming back to school for the final seven weeks, rested and ready to maximize the remaining time we will share together. The next three weeks are extremely important, especially for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. As we return from the break these students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate through the CRCT assessment instrument the curriculum they have mastered during this school year. The CRCT will include assessments in the areas of reading, math, English/language arts, science and social studies. In order to fulfill the federally mandated requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001(ESEA) students in grades 3-8 throughout the state of Georgia are required to take the CRCT (Criterion Referenced Competency Test). The CRCT is aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards, which guides the framework for the instructional curriculum of the Dade County School System. The teachers have been working very hard over the past several months to help students develop an understanding of the standards and elements that make up the curriculum in each grade level. The curriculum is aligned horizontally and vertically in order to close the achievement gaps and to provide the students with a rigorous and relative program of study. We know that many of you have been working alongside our teachers this year to reinforce at home the instruction that is taking place at school. You are reading with or to your children as well as working on math facts. The reinforcement that is provided at home not only strengthens a childs academic development, but it also signifies to the child that their parent appreciates and values education. Please talk with your child about the significance of these tests; not by placing undue stress on your child, but by providing encouragement to do his or her best on the assessments. Let them know that you are proud of the work they have done this year and you are excited that they will be able to demonstrate what they have learned. Confidence can inspire performance. Make sure your child gets plenty of rest, eats a good breakfast and is on time to school each day; these are simple but proven strategies.
