As early childhood educators, we strongly believe that the first three years are the most important years in a child’s life. Infants and toddlers are competent learners and the early years lay the foundation for learning in the child’s later years of life. Children learn through play, therefore play and individualized child-directed learning should be the key element in all infant and toddler programs. We believe all infants and toddlers need care that will provide ample learning opportunities during various play experiences throughout the day. These play experiences should enable children the freedom to explore using all of there senses. children learn from other children. By interacting with their peers, infants and toddlers learn much about the world, their power in it, and their effect on others. In addition, each and every child should be given a chance for daily individualized attention that focuses on each child as a unique individual with cultural and individual differences.
We also believe that children should be offered an enviornment that is safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate in which to learn and grow. It is essential that all infants and toddlers be given consistant, trusting, and loving care in order to build a strong attatchment to their caregiver. Thus, they need caregivers that are respectful, responsive and reciprocal to all of their needs. Children need to feel that they are important and that they matter and it is our responsibility as their secondary caregivers to make certain that this happens.
