Methodist - Presbyterian Nursery School

Our curriculum is based mainly on teacher created materials that help fulfill our mission. Over the years, we have accumulated an extensive number of resources needed materials to prepare our students for kindergarten. From these resources, we teach the alphabet and sounds, numbers, colors, shapes, and many other topics needed at this age. We make crafts and sing songs for instruction and play. We receive the Weekly Reader educational resource which includes a wide range of excellent teaching topics.

Children need academic development before going to kindergarten, but we believe they also need a firm foundation from the Word of God. For faith development, each week the children join in Small Talk. This is an age appropriate message from the pastors of the two churches or the youth directors. They take turns discussing Bible stories or biblical messages. Also, each teacher teaches a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet. As they learn a new letter they learn a Bible verse as well.

One important aspect of getting children ready for kindergarten is the social and emotional aspect. We work with the children through play inside the nursery school, out on the playground, or on out on field trips. As they play with each other we teach them to play nice and how to solve problems when an argument arises. We teach a Personal Safety Program issued by the State of Tennessee that touches on some of the issues of problem solving with your friends. This includes lessons on feelings, friends, family, self-esteem, and being safe.
