Our first function is to set the social atmosphere we would like to prevail throughout the year. We do this by having the children agree what they can and cannot do in the classroom. Critical remarks are done in private. A child isnever asked to apologize but what can he/she do to make the other childbetter. We will always help the child redirect his/her unacceptable behavior into more socially acceptable activities e.g. you cannot hit Tommy on the hewith the mallet but you can hit the clay. Sometimes children need time out to think about their actions. The teacher will talk to the child about whahappened and ask him/her to join the group when he/she feels ready.
