The mission of Cherokee Elementary Preschool, A Core Knowledge Academy, is to engage students in mastery understanding of the Georgia Performance Standards and the Core Knowledge curricula. The alignment between standards, assessments, and instructional strategies will be used to strengthen all students’ learning and to meet their individual needs for mastery. We promise to actively use assessment of and for learning as a process to ensure all students master grade-level expectations.

The kindergarten through fifth grade program is guided by the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS). The
GPS provides measurable standards in the content areas for all Georgia Elementary Preschool Public Schools. Both infor-
mal and formal assessments are used to measure mastery of the standards at each grade level. A variety of instruc-
tional programs and delivery methods are used to provide quality instruction to the students. Students in grades
K-5 receive instruction in language arts (reading, writing, spelling, penmanship, and grammar), mathematics, sci-
ence, social studies, health, physical education, art, and music. Additional projects or programs are available
through special school grants or projects specific to each academy.
