Write a messageAbout ten years ago I graduated college and said to myself, who do I want to be? That answer has been, and always will be:
An Educator, Artist, practitioner of transformative justice, a good communicator, and a really good friend. Children have taught me, and with an incredible amount of earnest, a lesson on how I operate in the world. Theyve taught me how to teach, create with intention, and to be a better community member. For the next four years, I nannied while getting a degree in writing. I didnt know it at the time, but I had signed up to nanny for one of Illinoiss top child psychologists, HA! Over the summer that I nannied for her, I developed my value system, and foundational beliefs around being in relationship with children and what is means when something is right and when something is wrong. I ended up enjoying it so much! It was the first time I had felt excitement for a career, incredibly big moment for me. I wanted to take the next ten years to build my teaching foundation. After a tumultuous and.. humbling first year of assistant directing, I moved back to Chicago to pursue teaching pre-school full time.
I then found a center that focused on the social-emotional, creative, and scientific elements of childhood education. settled in as the new preschool teacher of the grasshopper classroom. That time period put a fire in me in terms of using my creativity, generative creativity, and personality to connect with and help guide children in a non-infantilizing way and authentic way.
I was the first teacher at my preschool to return to work during the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. I was taking care of all the kids thatd returned and I needed to be back to work as a means of survival. At that point, the pre-school had low capacity to provide me with what I needed to evolve so, so with a heavy heart, I left. I knew that I was ready for the next step.
There is where I built and connected with the idea that children are their own independent people who need support. I worked with over 1000+ children, and I knew every single one of their names.
After KCC, I worked at an after-school program in downtown Chicago for a little while, then decided to leave because it wasnt enough hours to sustain my living costs. Because I was honest with him, the director of the program connected me to a position at his wifes Montessori school.
