Artisan Child Care

Center in Woburn, MA 01801

The Child: Our number one commitment at Artisan is the child. We provide a safe, clean and age-appropriate environment for children. This enables us to educate the whole child; physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually. We understand that childhood is a time to cherish because of its fleeting and sincere nature, therefore we nurture each child to the highest extent. We instill a love of learning in each child through innovative, hands-on experiences. We hope to make a difference in the lives of the children and families.

The Parent: At Artisan we understand that as a parent, it takes a tremendous amount of trust to leave your child with us. We respect your role as a parent and will work with you to ensure your child takes from our center what he or she needs. Our goal is for each parent to feel confident and comfortable when they leave their child with us. We pledge to communicate thoroughly with each family to make certain that your concerns are being addressed and your questions are being answered.

The Teacher: If the children are the heart of Artisan, then our teachers are the life blood. We trust in our teachers abilities to educate and foster each child. We respect the authority of each teacher in her own classroom and we seek to ensure that the lines of communication between teacher, administrator and parent are open. Our teachers are encouraged to form bonds with students and parents in order to create trust and confidence. We support our teachers professionally by promoting on-going training and course work.

The Environment: “We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.” ~Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac. Children who attend Artisan will learn to respect their environments, both indoors, and out. They will learn that to respect is to protect. We maintain a green facility that uses single stream recycling, energy efficient lighting, low VOC paint and renewable bamboo floors. These are just a few of the features that children will learn about in our quest to “go green.” Our outdoor green-space is considerable and will contain both a garden for children to plant and harvest from and a compost container. We hope to teach children that what we take from the earth, we must give back.

The artisan childcare center philosophy is comprised of three main components; Quality Childcare, Arts Programming, and “Green” Initiative

Quality Childcare: Artisan Childcare Center offers children ages 3 months through 5 years old, a safe environment for them to ask questions and explore the world in which they live with their peers and teachers. Our curriculum is the vehicle in which we deliver an enriched educational program to all children.

Our team of college educated early childhood teachers support the growth of each child by personalizing the curriculum to meet the child’s developmental needs. Each lesson and curriculum theme is developed and implemented by our team of professional educators.

Our classroom environments are designed with the child in mind. The child sized furniture allows children to move about the environment easily and recognize that the space is designed for them. The wide array of materials and toys in the classroom allows the children to feel confident in their skills by finding familiar activities. The space is also designed to spark their curiosity as they explore and discover new materials. Through their interactions with their peers, teachers and the intriguing materials that fill their classrooms, children cultivate a lifelong love of learning.

Arts Programming: “Researchers have found evidence that young children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory over the course of a year compared to children who do not receive musical training.”

The findings, published today in the online edition of the journal Brain (20 September 2006), show that “not only do the brains of musically-trained children respond to music in a different way to those of the untrained children, but also that the training improves their memory as well. After one year the musically trained children performed better in a memory test that is correlated with general intelligence skills such as literacy, verbal memory, visio-spatial processing, mathematics and IQ.” (Science Daily, 2006)

Exposing children to music instruction is not just about learning to play an instrument, but helps builds self esteem, improves academics, and enhances literacy skills. We believe that early childhood arts education can play an important role in the overall development of productive well adjusted children.

“Green” Initiative: In addition to a strong early childhood and music program, our Center will also educate children as to what it means to be “Green”. The Center was just renovated to be a “Green Facility”, with renewable bamboo flooring, low VOC paint, and energy efficient lighting and appliances. The Center participates in “single stream” recycling that allows us to recycle glass, plastics, paper, cardboard and metal, all in the same bin.

Artisan has approximately 2 acre of green outdoor play space for children to explore nature, build castles in our large sand area, or climb up to the “observation deck” in our play structure. We also have a vegetable garden and compost center where children can help plant and grow their own snacks! Our students will be active participants in helping maintain our green facility by participating in recycling and learning about how they can impact the protection of our physical environment. At Artisan, we believe that teaching children how to be stewards of their environment (both indoors and out) builds a sense of responsibility and respect that will follow them into the future.
