The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) is a top-rated, 501©(3) military nonprofit organization designed to make military life easier. Headquartered in Springfield, Virginia, we provide hands-on, innovative, specialized programs and support services to military service members and their families with a particular focus on junior-enlisted men and women the individuals on the front lines of defending our nation. Programs are offered at no or low cost and require no dues or membership- if they carry an active-duty or dependent ID card; we consider them to be part of the Armed Services YMCA Family.
The beginning of YMCA service in the military setting usually is associated with the year 1861, when 5,000 dedicated YMCA volunteers took to the battlefields of the Civil War alongside Americas uniformed young men. It was the year that Abraham Lincoln commended YMCA for the benevolent undertaking for the benefit of the soldiers. The tradition of following the flag has continued in every war and conflict in which the United States has been involved.
Today, the ASYMCA is a proud partner and national member association of the YMCA of the USA. The ASYMCA operates more than 150 program centers nationwide, working closely with the Department of Defense and military bases on the ground. The possibility of expansion into geographical areas where there are unmet needs always exists, and there is no effort to compete with other support agencies. Where there is a need, we try to meet it in cooperation with the installation commander, and strong partnerships with other non-profits, such as: the YMCA, Operation Homefront, the USO, the Sierra Club, and Newmans Own, so that we can remain a top-rated, effective and fiscally responsible military charity that is ranked to be among the top 3% of Charities nationwide by Charity Navigator.
At its 33 branches and affiliate locations, the ASYMCA offers unique essential programs such as childcare, hospital assistance, spouse support services, food services, deployment support, emergency support, computer training classes, counseling, wounded warrior support, health and wellness services, and holiday programs that are tailored to the specific needs of the military community on the local level. In addition to these locations, the ASYMCA and its programs are implemented by partners at ten affiliated community YMCAs, as well as nine Department of Defense affiliates worldwide, that have large military communities and are able to benefit from ASYMCA programming.
The ASYMCA has only about 500 employees, while relying on more than 18,000 volunteers to deliver 115,000 volunteer hours, saving the organization over 2.5 million dollars while being able to offer our free or low-cost programs and services to nearly 450,000 service members and their families annually. By operating out of free donated spaces, and keeping staff costs low, we are able to focus on programs and services.
We receive no government funding and are funded fully by private donations. Please consider making a donation or volunteering today to help us in our mission of making military life easier. The need has never been greater, and with your contribution, we will be able to serve more military families together.
