Ministry to children of all ages has always been an integral part of who we are as a church family. If you talk to people who grew up at WNCC, fond memories of youth club, Vacation Bible School, youth choir, and youth group abound. As the needs of our culture and community have changed over the years, our ministries have changed. We have responded, however, with the same goal of reaching out to others with the love and saving grace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
The word Koinonia is derived from the Bible, a Greek work meaning Fellowship. The Koinonia Ministries began in 1990 with a summer camp program for elementary-aged children. The first director of this program was Jennifer (Cronk) Bell. Over the years it has grown in size and scope. It currently is offered for children in grades one through nine and the average weekly attendance is between 60 and 100 children. The summer camp runs for six themed weeks each summer.
Koinonia Preschool/ Daycare was established in 1995. Jean Cronk served as the founding director. The Preschool /Daycare offers programs for infants through kindergarten, 5 days per week. The school is licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care and is a member school of the Association of Christian Schools International.
The summer of 1997 marked the beginning of our Koinonia YAS program. YAS (Young AdultS) began as part of the Koinonia Day Camp program. There was a group of children who still wanted to go to camp, but did not necessarily want to sit with the five year olds doing arts and crafts. So YAS was created for those in 7th-12th grade. YAS expanded to include after school, evening and week-end activities. Doris Buckley served as the programs first youth minister.
