“Learning is FUN!” Let us tell you about our philosophy. A valid question which is frequently asked is “what is your purpose?” it’s true our children are making pumpkin people, painting unusual pictures, taking walks, and “just playing and having fun.” Sometimes, it is difficult to see that there are concrete goals and a strong philosophy which underlies all of this madness! Our purpose is to provide each child with an educational program which fosters his or her competency in dealing with all aspects of life. We strive to help each child in gaining a better understanding of themselves and their world.
Yes, this really is a worthwhile purpose in pre-school education. Children have a very natural desire and ability to learn. We feel it is very important that a child’s natural curiosity and thirst for knowledge be reinforced, and the way to reinforce learning is by making it rewarding to them. The cognitive aspect of a child’s life is reinforced when he or she is encouraged to solve problems and to discover new things, thoughts and ideas.
Children learn best from direct sensory experience and participation. For this reason, we spend a great deal of time “on the road”-both on foot and , with parents’ help, in cars. We feel very strongly that the best way to learn about the outside world is to meet it. Field trips are an important part of our program, and we purposely incorporate several trips in our program each year. Each parent’s interest and willingness are essential to continue these experiences.
We facilitate competency in each child’s social development by encouraging getting along in groups, taking turns, listening, sharing and communicating. Self-discipline is necessary for a child all through life. Rather than emphasizing external disciplines (the teacher, parent or other authority), we encourage each child to develop internal discipline. We help each child develop an awareness of others, and we reinforce pro-social discipline. It is important that a child learn how to be an assertive individual-not aggressive or too docile! Increased independence and cooperation with others are both important skills to develop.
Feelings are important and valid, and we provide each child with an environment that encourages him or her to express feelings. “Pretending” helps children develop a positive self-image and provides them an opportunity to act out “bad” feelings. We try to help them discover that it’s okay to “feel”; then, we need to learn what action to take. Every child’s emotional health is a high priority at Pumpkin Shell.
Also, of utmost importance is that your child learns to love school and the learning process. We encourage children to be inquisitive, ask questions and ignite their imaginations. We want all children to LOVE to LEARN!
