The curriculum used at YMCA Head Start is based on sound early-child education principles and developmentally appropriate practices. Teachers observe children to determine the needs, interests and abilities of individual children and groups of children. Teaching teams develop lesson plans from these observations and their knowledge of early childhood education. To individualize the curriculum to meet each childs developmental stage and areas of interests, a number of screening and assessment tools are utilized. The teachers use anecdotal observations, information given by parents in interviews, home visits, conferences and helpful screening/assessment instruments throughout the year to gather information about the children to then plan activities for the large group, small groups and for individuals within each classroom. The instruments might include the Brigance or other developmental screening tools. Various speech and language screening tools, hearing and articulation as well as mental health and dental and other evaluations may be utilized.
