Through reflection and refinement, Scott County High School strives toward continuous improvement in order to better meet the educational needs of every student. This year SCHS has enjoyed the success of several key programs and at the same time has redefined how educators work together to improve student learning.
SCHS teachers have been reorganized into collaborative teams. Within these teams, teachers work to ensure that every student has access to the same guaranteed curriculum, and that constant monitoring occurs to track each students progress toward their learning goals. Knowing where the learners are, educators can then apply timely and effective interventions when students fall behind or enrichments when students surge ahead of instruction. Toward this end, SCHS is off to a great start.
Teachers have mapped and paced their class content, have developed common assessments, and are analyzing student results. These results are then used to refine instructional strategies, and to identify students for interventions.
Students have diverse learning needs, and all students occasionally need help. With this in mind, weve worked with our partners at the district and the ninth grade school to retool our intervention program. This highly effective team led by Joretta Crowe, has been reorganized to maximize the flexibility needed to meet the students when and where their needs emerge.
The SCHS Advanced Placement program has been profoundly improved over the past year through the application of a grant secured and managed through the hard work of Chip Southworth and Melody Stacy. In just one year, SCHS saw a 150% increase in AP student qualifying scores.
Some students occasionally have self-discipline related challenges that get in the way of their learning and of the learning of others. A team of educators led by teacher Bill Willson, has learned and applied a program called PASS that enhances behavior monitoring and intervention so that all students are able to remain productive contributors in the classroom. This program has cut the number of classroom disruption referrals in half.
Getting better forever is our status quo. We are excited by our successes and continue to work where we find challenges. The future is bright for Scott County High School.
