Southwest Play School (SWPS) has been touching the lives of children for over 40 years. Mrs. Jane Casati founded Columbias first parent owned and operated preschool for 3 and 4 year olds in 1964. It was her desire to provide a place where children could learn and grow in a positive, loving environment and allow parents to be a part of that magic. Our teacher, Miss Sharen Garrett, has continued this vision since 1984. Through her knowledge and expertise in working with preschoolers, she cultivates childrens natural curiosity and desire to learn.

It is the philosophy by which all activities, special events, and even the physical environments of the school are designed. The school has a comfortable, home-like atmosphere which includes the indoor play area (the “big” room), the fireplace room, the kitchen and the “garden” room. Each day allows time in all areas of the school for activities that include: individual sharing, show & tell, music, science, numbers & counting, snack, stories, art and language. The playground is also designed so children can explore and pretend. It contains everything from swings and slides to a log cabin and a ship. The children discover so many things to be excited about in their world at SWPS!
The special activities available at SWPS also build on the philosophy that preschool children learn best through play. Field trips are a great way for the children to explore and experience the world around them. For example, the children love picking their own pumpkins to decorate when they visit a farm in the fall. Other highlights for children throughout the year at SWPS are the themed days. One example, the extremely popular Wheels Day, transforms the parking lot into a place where children can rule the “highways” with their favorite modes of self-propulsion.
