Positive Alternative has been a family-owned and operated facility since October 1988. Marcia Rush, co-founder and current Owner/Director, saw a need for a safe place for parents to leave their children while at work. Her desire was to create a small, ‘family-like’ atmosphere where each staff member knew, and had a relationship with, each child.

The ‘positive alternative to staying home wih your child’ concept emerged from the observation that most childcare facilities treated their centers like formal schools. Positive Alternative’s hope was to create a fun, stimulating, and challenging learning environment while still retaining the nurturing, warm, home-like, and loving environment necessary for a young child.

The vision quickly took hold, and the school grew from eight to eighty-four children, requiring a move to a larger location nearby. Over the years the school moved its location again, and has remained in its current facility on Yale Avenue since 1997. The school currently accepts a maximum of 43 children.

The belief that children need to be modeled as well as taught social skills has become an important focus at Positive Alternative. Throughout the years, staff members have come to infuse life skills such as problem solving, ‘using one’s words,’ and ‘voice of reason’ into the context of each activity throughout the day. Teachers strive to help children to learn how to REALLY interact and treat one another, something that is not emphasized in many childcare institutions. Many families have returned years later to say ‘thank you’ for encouraging their children’s social and emotional development.

We believe that because Positive Alternative will most likely be your child’s first experience at school, it is important to make it a positive and pleasurable interaction. We understand that each child is a unique individual, and we respect the many different lifestyles and backgrounds that contribute to the development of a child’s personality. We work with each family to make the experience of going to school as comfortable as possible.

Our primary goals include physical development, social development, intellectual development, and life skills. Positive Alternative focuses on life-long skills as well as academics, in a developmentally appropriate style. While some children are quite ready for rigorous academics, some may not be developmentally ready. We address each child’s individual developmental levels. Problem solving, conflict resolution, and communication skills are among the highest priorities in our commitment to your child’s education and growth.

Our goal is to help each child be successful with their behavior at all times. When situations requiring discipline arise, we try to approach each situation in a positive way. We actively try to help the child solve the problem with reasoning and words. The child must take responsibility for his or her actions. If we separate a child from the class, such breaks will be brief and appropriate for the child’s age.

Children will not be subjected to physical or emotional harm or humiliation. Staff will not use corporal punishment in any form, nor will discipline be associated with food, rest, or toileting.
