My last Internship was for the 2015-2016 Academic year at the Barack Obama Elementary School in Hempstead, NY. I was the School Social Work Intern who enjoyed working with children and empowering them to become better citizens!
o Primary role is to conduct and facilitate leadership and social skills groups with students who are in grades 1-5 – children learn through a structured curriculum that includes group work with other children
o Some of the services I deliver to students and their prospective families include advocacy, counseling, mentoring, crisis intervention, assist with conflict resolution & anger management, homework help, art therapy, cognitive-behavior therapy and etc.
o Collaborate with the Instructional Support Team (IST) in order to develop special needs childrens Individualized Education Program (IEP)
o Participate in meetings between parents, school faculty, and other community members in order to develop academic plans for students and the future plans for the school community
o Advocates for new and improved school services to meet the needs of the students and their families includes helping the school receive adequate support from outside agencies including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long island and Adelphis mentor program
