My name is Noa, and I’m a highschool student at the Birch Wathen Lenox School in Manhattan, and this summer I’m taking pre-college psychology classes at Barnard.
I currently volunteer at Sanctuary for Families, a non-profit organization which provides free services to survivors of gender-based violence and their children. I specifically help out in the Justice and Empowerment for Teens (JET) initiative, which was designed specifically to aide young women between 12-24 who are victims of commercial sex trafficking. In addition to working with the survivors themselves, I also assist in taking care of clients children while the mother is in therapy sessions or meeting with lawyers. Working at Sanctuary has been immensely fulfilling and eye-opening, fueled my desire to help others, and also demonstrates the enormous positive impact that having supportive, safe, and caring relationships can have on a childs mental and emotional wellbeing.
In addition to taking care of children at Sanctuary, I also have considerable experience taking care of those with special needs. My entire life has included a diverse range of experiences and relationships. My father, uncle, and two cousins are autistic, so I have always felt a close connection with those on the spectrum. My father, uncle, and cousin have Asperger’s, while my youngest cousin was nonverbal until he was 11 and still struggles with a speech impediment. Though he is considered “low-functioning”, he is one of the sweetest, most creative people I know, and I love spending time with him.
I want to connect with those who may feel disconnected from the world and help them feel validated, understood, and supported.
