I have many, many years of childcare experience.

Presently
1) I volunteer to teach and assist with Religious Education classes at my church
2) My friends and I have a babysitting co-op in which we watch each other’s children
3) I have two boys of my own (ages 2 and 4).

My favorite thing to do with children is read and get them to engage with the book by asking questions and seeking their opinions on the characters’ feelings and motivations. I like to do crafts (you should see my Pinterest—it’s out of control!), play pretend and ask children about their days.

My own parenting style is to be firm but understanding, with a hat tip to the Hand In Hand Parenting school of thought. This means that when I say something (such as bedtime in 5 minutes), there is no negotiation. However, whenever possible, I like to give children choices so they can learn independence and express themselves. I also think that is is very important to acknowledge the reality of the child’s emotions. It’s OK to freak out because bedtime is in 5 minutes—let’s talk about it and find ways to help you relax. But, in the end, bedtime is still in 5 minutes :-)

My 4-year-old has autism (including speech delay, low muscle tone and sensory issues), so I have daily experience with children with special needs. I am very involved in the special needs parenting group in my city, helping families find resources and advocate for their childrens’ rights. I use aids such as visual schedules, social stories and token boards with my son.

I am looking for evening and night jobs, with some weekends possible. I’d love to be on your list of regular sitters and help you out with date nights. If you’d like to enter into a re-occuring schedule, I’d be interested.
