Write a messageDuring the summer of 2008 and 2009, I worked as a camp counselor/mentor at the United Nations Leadership Academy in Harvey, IL. As a mentor, I helped to create a safe space for creativity, encouraged students to have an interest in local and global politics, and helped students make it through day-to-day issues. I am especially grateful for this position because I was able to work with young students in my own community. As a child, I looked towards programs like this to express myself in ways that I couldnt at home. So, being able to help provide that for another child has consistently been very fulfilling.
In the fall of 2013, I volunteered as a tutor/teacher at B.A.S.I.C.S International School in Accra, Ghana. At B.A.S.I.C.S, I help students with their homework, encourage the use of writing in both English and their native tongue, and I teach a poetry/creative writing class. Although most of the students are multilingual, some of them are not fluent English speakers. As a teacher, this is extremely challenging because I cant communicate with those students as much as I would like to. However, my students are still able to openly express themselves through writing whether it is in English or their own language. Through this position I realized that my passion lies in helping children and students in whatever ways I can.
In addition to these experiences, I have held various sitter positions throughout my years in high school and college.
