Hi! My name is Nydia Peterson, and I’m an active, fun-loving and tenacious 18 year old with a lot of experience with childcare!

I first started working with children 3 years ago as a summer camp counselor at Camp Yomi where I worked with 4-5 year olds. Then for the next two summers, I worked with children from 6-9 years old. For the younger kids, we assisted them with things such as getting dressed, using the bathroom, and even eating. The older children were more independent, but required even more patience, persistence, and authority! As a camp counselor, I spent all day with my kids, from 7 AM, when we picked them up at their bus stop, to 6 PM, when we dropped them back off. I was non-stop caring for my kids, tending to their needs, always attentive and mindful of their behavior, and consistently making sure that they were not just happy and entertained, but also safe and well-behaved. When an argument arose among my kids, I always handled it efficiently and got the children to understand what they had done wrong, and apologize. This job required a lot of energy, quick-thinking, and even restraint at times to not lose my temper. Although there were many times where my patience was tested, I never lost my composure with the children, and always spoke to them kindly, but with discipline when it was appropriately needed. Although this job was a lot of hard work, I thoroughly enjoyed caring for and spending time with my kids, and I had come to realize that caring for children was my passion. To see them filled with such pure joy, to hear them whole-heartedly laugh at my silly jokes, and to have them look up to me and admire me, was worth all of the tests of my patience and energy!

As well as my experience as a camp counselor, I also have experience with babysitting some of my kids from camp. They had loved me so much they had asked their parents if I could babysit and have a play date! This included cooking for the kids, playing games with them, taking them out to the park, helping with homework, and pretty much anything to keep our time together fun and exciting, yet safe and structured.

I currently am volunteering at my church’s Sunday School, where we watch over the children and teach them about the Bible in a fun and entertaining way. This includes acting in different skits, teaching them different songs, answering any questions that they have, and helping them with activities such as arts and crafts. I usually work with 15+ kids at a time!
