From my summer going into 8th grade, I knew working with kids was going to forever be a passion of mine. That summer, I worked at Terriers Sports Camp in Wellesley, and my “team” won the World Series. But it wasn’t the close, nail-biting victory I was so happy about – it was seeing every single kid at that camp, whether on the winning team, losing team, or just a spectator, smiling. Kids just want to have fun! And the best part is (from a personal standpoint) that when I am around them, that’s all I want to do as well.
Since that summer, I have worked with kids every single year in one way or another. I continued to “coach” at Terriers Sports Camp until my freshman year of college, while also refereeing youth basketball in the winters. While at Terrier’s, a family with three boys (who attended the camp) asked me to become their babysitter. For three years off and on, I babysat and played sports with these three all-stars.
Finally, in college, because I knew I always wanted to stay involved with childcare, I joined a mentoring program called the DREAM Program – a university affiliated service that pairs college students with underprivileged “mentees”. I was paired with an 11 year old boy who I hung out with/ did activities with once or twice a week for two years, and also became Vice President of Recruitment for the DREAM Program for the final two and a half years of my college experience.
Feel free to touch base with any and all questions! I don’t take offense if it doesn’t work out.
